Infrastructure investments

QR Network is delivering its largest-ever infrastructure investment program, with more than 60 major projects currently underway to improve operations and increase capacity across our 10,000 kilometre network.

QR Network infrastructure investment

QR Network has quadrupled its infrastructure investment on the network over the past four years, with $1.3 billion of new infrastructure being delivered in the 2008/09 financial year.  Currently, more than 60 projects are underway, and they are being delivered on time and on budget.

Program budget
$3.5 billion

Established in 2006, QR Network’s COALRail program has delivered $500 million in new infrastructure on our five Central Queensland coal systems.  We are currently undertaking a $3.5 billion program of works agreed with our supply chain partners to increase capacity by more than 40% across the network by the year 2010, with additional increases planned over the next five years.

QR Network is managing the delivery of the rail and some road components of the government’s $107 billion South East Queensland Infrastructure Program.  We have established three Alliances to deliver these projects.  They are the TrackStar Alliance with Thiess United Group, Connell Wagner and Maunsell Australia: the Horizon Alliance with the Department of Main Roads, John Holland Construction, GHD and Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR) and the S2K Alliance with Abigroup Contractors.

Project team on site at Jilalan as work gets underway

Jilalan Yard southbound

Work is underway at QR’s Jilalan Rail Yard upgrade. The 500-million dollar upgrade, which is due to be completed at the end of 2009, will provide vital support to the booming Goonyella coal system.

In a first for regional Queensland, QR is working with an alliance of partners on the project and QR Network General Manager Paul Hoffmann says the scale of the work exceeds anything previously seen in the area.

“At the height of this project there will be up to 300 people working on site and a significant number of these employees will be from the local community around Sarina and Mackay,” he said.

The expansion of the yard includes two new bypass roads with provision for a third, two provisioning tracks, a wagon maintenance facility and modifications to the existing yard and tracks.

QR’s partners in the Coal Stream Alliance are – Macmahon Holdings, MVM Rail, Connell Wagner, Hatch and Parsons Brinkerhoff.

Mr Hoffmann said he expected members of the Coal Stream Alliance would become familiar faces in the local area.

“We are going to be on site for 18 months and I think it is very important we get to know the local community and get involved in community activities.”

The Jilalan Rail Yard was built in the 1970s following the opening of the Dalrymple Bay Port.  The upgrade will see capacity to feed through the yard grow from 90mtpa to 129mtpa by 2010.

Did you know?

Queensland’s vast rail network is owned by QR and supported by state of the art infrastructure and systems. The rail network is valued at some $AUD6 billion.

Rail is a much safer form of transport than road (road has approximately 40 times the amount of transport fatalities than rail).

On 1 September 2008, QR Network Pty Ltd became a stand alone subsidiary company of QR Ltd.

The Australian rail industry is open to competition and in Queensland, rail operators can apply to use QR Network’s 10,000km of narrow gauge, standard gauge and dual gauge track.

Road produces approximately 4.5 times more CO2 equivalent (green house gas emissions) than rail.
