Infrastructure investments

QR Network is delivering its largest-ever infrastructure investment program, with more than 60 major projects currently underway to improve operations and increase capacity across our 10,000 kilometre network.

Infrastructure Delivery

QR Network has quadrupled its infrastructure investment on the network over the past four years, with $1.3 billion of new infrastructure being delivered in the 2008/09 financial year.  Currently, more than 60 projects are underway, and they are being delivered on time and on budget.

Our projects are focused on three areas:

  • Our Central Queensland coal systems
  • The South East Queensland passenger network
  • The coastal freight network
  • Coal Loss Management Project

    Coal Loss Management Project

QR has spent more than 12 months working with the coal industry and the community to monitor and evaluate coal dust emissions in central Queensland and develop a Coal Dust Management Plan.

  • Moura Link - Aldoga rail yard project

Moura Link - Aldoga rail yard project

To cater for new tonnages from existing and new coal mines, QR is proposing a major expansion of its rail network in the less populated areas to the north west of greater Gladstone. These works will service a number of facilities, including the new Wiggins Island Coal Terminal (WICT) at the Port of Gladstone.

  • Moura Link - Aldoga rail EIS

Moura Link - Aldoga rail EIS

QR Ltd proposes to develop new railway infrastructure to service the increasing demand for the export of coal from Central Queensland coal mines. This EIS has been prepared in support of the required rail infrastructure proposed to the north west of Gladstone.

  • Wiggins Island project

    Wiggins Island project

Central Queensland Ports Authority and QR propose to develop a coal terminal in the Port of Gladstone at Wiggins Island, with an initial capacity of 20Mtpa, with the capability to upgrade it to 70Mtpa in later stages.

  • Northern Missing Link EIS

    Northern Missing Link EIS

Queensland Rail is proposing to construct and operate a 69 km rail link between North Goonyella and Newlands rail systems situated in the Central Queensland Bowen Basin coalfields, directly west of the township of Glenden.

  • GAP Project

    GAP Project

The proposed Goonyella to Abbot Point Expansion Project (GAP Project) aims to ease constraints on the Goonyella System and increase capacity to Abbot Point through the Newlands line.

Did you know?

Queensland’s vast rail network is owned by QR and supported by state of the art infrastructure and systems. The rail network is valued at some $AUD6 billion.

Rail is a much safer form of transport than road (road has approximately 40 times the amount of transport fatalities than rail).

The Australian rail industry is open to competition and in Queensland, rail operators can apply to use QR Network’s 10,000km of narrow gauge, standard gauge and dual gauge track.

On 1 September 2008, QR Network Pty Ltd became a stand alone subsidiary company of QR Ltd.

Road produces approximately 4.5 times more CO2 equivalent (green house gas emissions) than rail.
